What is bitcoin?

Who is bitcoin for?

Whether we are talking about credit card, bank transfers, cash, gold, or bitcoin, every form of money has trade offs that makes them more and less suitable for different people in different places.

Bitcoin can make sense as a store of value or a means of payment in a variety of contexts. Whether or not bitcoin is a good option for you will depend on your circumstances and your range of alternatives. Some situations in which bitcoin might make sense include:

  • Using bitcoin as a store of value in an economy experiencing high inflation
  • Using bitcoin as an investment as a means of portfolio diversification
  • Using bitcoin to purchase goods when cash and credit card systems are not suitable
  • Using bitcoin as an alternative to remittances

Holding, Receiving, Sending Bitcoin


Abra is a global cryptocurrency app that allows you to buy, store, spend and invest in cryptocurrencies in one place. Go to Abra's website here.

Overview and prerequisites

Abra can be used as a basic wallet to receive and send cryptocurrency (no bank account necessary).


  • iPhone (iOS 11.3.1+) or Android (OS 4.4+) supported
  • Internet access through wifi or mobile data


  1. Download Abra mobile wallet from Google Play Store or iOS App Store
  2. Create account and pin
  3. Write down wallet recovery phrase using a pen on at least 3 different pieces of paper
  4. Store pieces of paper in secure places (like a safe, your wallet, or a locked drawer)
  5. Retype phrase into the app to confirm you have written it down correctly
  6. You are ready to receive bitcoin!

Receiving bitcoin

  1. Press "Add Money" at the bottom of the dashboard page
  2. Click "Use bitcoin" on the next screen
  3. Press "Copy bitcoin (BTC) address"
  4. Paste this address to the friend, family member, or colleague who wants to send you bitcoin
  5. The bitcoin should appear in your wallet within an hour after your friend has sent it to you

Sending bitcoin

  1. You will need a bitcoin balance greater than 0 to send bitcoin
  2. The person you are sending to will need an Abra wallet
  3. The person you are sending to will need to be in your contacts
  4. Press the three bar menu button on the top left of the dashboard screen
  5. Press send to an Abra user
  6. Select the recipient from your contacts
  7. Click "Bitcoin" when it asks you to tap a wallet
  8. Enter amount of bitcoin you wish to send and paste in the address you wish to send to
  9. Carefully double check the recipient's address before you press send
  10. Press send

AirTM is a wallet and exchange that facilitates value transfer among banks, e-money services, and cryptocurrencies, enabling anyone to send money P2P.

AirTM can be used as means of converting and transferring across a number of platforms, including cryptocurrencies.

Misthos Wallet

Misthos is an open-source multisig bitcoin wallet that lets you easily and collaboratively hold and manage your funds. With an easy-to-use interface, you can create Ventures (wallets) with various Partners (custodians), based on decentralized Blockstack IDs. And with customizable settings, you can determine what level of consensus is required to send money out of the wallet or add or remove Partners.

Getting Started

  1. Go to
  2. Click on the "Sign in with Blockstack" button.
  3. At this point you will be redirected and prompted to install the Blockstack browser and asked to set up a Blockstack ID. You are now ready to sign into Misthos.
  4. Start the Blockstack browser. (This step is important as the Misthos app calls the Blockstack browser.)
  5. Re-open the page and click on the "Sign In with Blockstack" button. You will see a "Sign-In Request" pop-up.
  6. Choose the Blockstack ID you want to sign in with and click on "Approve" to give Misthos the required permissions.

Receiving Bitcoin

  1. Click on the "Receive" button on the main home screen.
  2. A pop-up will appear and create your with your "Income Address".
  3. Use this address (either by copying the address or scanning the QR code) to receive funds.

Sending Bitcoin

In order to propose a payout (send bitcoin):

  1. Click on the "Payout" button within the main Venture view. This will open up a "Create a Payout" page.
  2. Enter the receiving address and the BTC amount.
  3. On the right side of this page, you can see the summary of the payout which includes a breakdown of the BTC amount and the Network fee.
  4. You can now either proceed with this payout by clicking on "Propose Payout" or choose to add another recipient.

Adding and Removing Partners

In order to add a Partner to a Venture:

  1. Go to the main Venture view and click on "Add or Remove Partners".
  2. A pop-up will appear. Here enter the Blockstack ID of the new Partner and click on "Propose Partner".
  3. Share the Venture URL with the added Partner.
  4. Access will be granted once all other Partners have endorsed the proposal.

In order to remove a Partner, a proposal needs to be submitted. This step requires enough existing Partners to endorse the proposal.

Acquiring Bitcoin

In order to acquire bitcoin, you will need a wallet. If you do not yet have a wallet, please skip back to section 2 and follow the set up guides on Abra or AirTM.

Mining is the process by which decentralized cryptocurrencies are minted or introduced into the economy. You can think of mining as a public service performed for the entire system of people using the cryptocurrency. In exchange for performing that public service, you are rewarded with new coins.
